You’ve seen the incredible second trailer for Captain America: Civil War, so now it’s my job to pick it apart for you!
I’ve unlocked a few key things that reveals much behind the plot of Captain America: Civil War that you might have missed.
But first, let’s pick up where Captain America: The Winter Soldier last left off.
A quick recap:
Bucky Barnes was an American soldier and best friend to Steve Rogers / Captain America.
Bucky was believed to have been killed in action during World War II, but in fact he was kidnapped by a terrorist organisation called Hydra. He was experimented on and mind controlled to be their assassin, used to kill whoever stood in Hydra’s way.
As the Winter Soldier he was responsible for many high profile assassinations over 50 years, cryogenically frozen and brain washed in between missions to keep him young and under Hydra’s full control. His experiences with the KGB would earn him the name the “Winter Soldier”. The Winter Soldier eventually broke free of Hydra’s control during present day, and has since been on the run with both Captain America and the Sokovia Accords, a military law enforcement group appointed by the world’s governments, who are trying to find him.
1. WINTER
The trailer opens up with a wide shot of an icy wasteland.
Next we see two guards simultaneously opening up the door to a high security cell. The badge on the guard’s shoulder translates to “Russia Armed Forces” and has the current Russian flag on it, so we know this scene isn’t a flashback (shout out to Max Mamaev and Kelvin, my Russian translators).
We also see a glimpse of Hydra’s logo at the centre of the door, so this cell must belong to one person: Bucky Barnes AKA the Winter Soldier.
We see the Winter Soldier emerge from his cryo-chamber that’s keeping him fresh and frozen. We were told this movie would be deeply psychological, so this may not truly be Hydra or the Russia Armed Forces, but a deception by the Sokovia Accords intended to break down an imprisoned Bucky Barnes.
2. Terrorist Attack
We see a building explode which looks like the United Nations, apparently caused by our villain of the movie Crossbones (introduced as evil Hydra baddie Brock Rumlow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Caught in the explosion is T’Challa, prince of a nation called Wakanda – an African country that mines the invincible metal known as Vibranium, the same metal that Captain America’s shield is made from. This terrorist attack could be what drives T’Challa to become the hero and Avenger known as the Black Panther.
3. Avengers Prison
We need to be kept in check, whatever form that takes I’m game
We hear Tony Stark say he’ll do what it takes to keep the Avengers in check. Then we see him as Iron Man, dropping out of a helicopter and flying away. That same helicopter lands in a hi-tech fortress that rises from the middle of an ocean.
We then see Tony Stark surrounded by hi-tech cells, so we’re led to believe that this fortress is actually a prison built by Tony Stark that is intended to hold these rogue Avengers on Captain America’s team. Tony Stark built a containment unit meant to hold the Hulk, so building a prison to hold the Avengers is more than possible.
4. Black Panther
Want to know how fast Black Panther is? Let’s paws for thought. He’s really fast, but not as fast as Quicksilver (RIP). Thanks to his powers that make him for all intents and purposes a ‘super soldier’ with super stamina, reflexes and strength.
He can run faster than Captain America.
He can ‘leap frog’ a moving car.
He can dodge a collapsing building
Just to get his hands (claws) on the otherwise elusive Winter Soldier.
5. Mystery Man
It looks like we’re back in the Winter Soldier’s cell in Russia. Iron Man and Captain America are fighting, and the Winter Soldier is free, outside of his cryo chamber too. But if you look at the chamber, we can see someone else is in there. Who could the mystery person be?
6. Switching Sides
I’m not the one that needs to watch their back.
Which side is the Black Widow on? Before she was an Avenger she was a SHIELD Agent, before she was a SHIELD Agent she was a KGB spy, so the Black Widow is no stranger to switching sides. We see her running with Iron Man’s team first, then we see her standing with Captain America.
7. Scarlet Witch vs. Vision
A battle takes place in Avengers HQ. The Scarlet Witch is using her powers to take down the Vision. You can see a glimpse of Hawkeye who is on the ground and injured at the Scarlet Witch’s feet, and being protected from the Vision. Hawkeye inspired her to become an Avenger in Age Of Ultron, so their friendship by this point has grown.
8. Ant-Arrow
Hawkeye is firing his arrow which splinters into other arrows and who should be inside and riding one of those arrows? Ant-Man!
9. Cap Could Do This All Day
Cap says in to Iron Man in the trailer “I could do this all day”, a reference to his line in the first Captain America film when a pre-super soldier Steve Rogers is being bullied in an alley, who also uses that line later in life when facing off against the Red Skull as Cap.
10. “Hey everyone.”
Your first look at Spider-Man!
Tony Stark calls in his secret weapon: Spider-Man. This is very much in line with what happens in the comic books. Tony Stark also designs Spider-Man a new suit, so we assume this is where Spider-Man gets his outfit from.
Let’s take a closer look at his costume.
The eyes are very similar to his first comic book appearance. The “squinting” of the eyes on his mask is quite animated, but you can also hear the lenses of the eyes on his mask move, like the shutter of a camera, so we understand that this animated control of his mask is indeed mechanical. It’s also in line with how expressive Spider-Man’s masked appearance is in the comics.
The costume designer even seemed to nail the small details, like the little spider logo on his chest and back
Web Shooters
In the first Spider-Man film Sony did with Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man’s webbing was part of his biological spider powers. Well it seems they’re sticking with his comic book origin in the way that his “webbing” is shot from mechanical ‘web shooters’ attached to his wrist. You can see one of his web shooters in the trailer (pictured).
(BONUS ROUND) 11. Did he just say “Underoos”?
He sure did! ‘Underoos’ were a brand of superhero-themed underwear for youths that were popular in the 1960s and 70s, most likely Iron Man was teasing Spider-Man’s tight costume.
