KENNY & XENOJAY’s Top 10 Avenger Moments

Avengers Assembled NYC

Comic book super fans Kenny and Xenojay have teamed up to assemble (ha.) their Top 10 ‘Avengers’ moments from across the Marvel movies you love.

The Captain’s Heart (Captain America: The First Avenger)

PCSAD

Xenojay:

In The First Avenger, the romance between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter stands-out amongst the Captain’s discovery of himself.

While weak of form, his mind and heart are what reached out to Dr. Erskine who chose Steve as the first true Super Soldier. Already impressing Carter with his heroism, loyalty and belief, it’s when he starts to discover his own confidence that he sees Peggy as someone he can “dance with”.

Come the film’s climax, the Captain and Agent Carter finally have their moment together before he goes to save the world.

And that’s it.

As he shows once again why he was the perfect choice to become the Captain, Steve and Peggy share one final conversation before he goes into the “big sleep”, which not only breaks the strong and amazing Agent Carter, but the audience as well.

“Steve? Steve??…”

Councillor Black Widow (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Kenny:

The Winter Soldier was so perfect in the way it humanised it’s characters to be more than ‘kick ass comic heroes / villains’. Natasha Romanoff really got her chance to shine in this movie as being more than just a weapon. However, her reputation for being the Black Widow is undeniable and while we get to see her be a trained killer with incredible martial arts prowess, we see more of her espionage talents in one of the final scenes, which is just another reminder that Black Widow is the perfect spy.

As a wanted fugitive, she infiltrates S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters by impersonating World Security Councilwoman Hawley to get close enough to Alexander Pierce and protect the other Council members until Nick Fury arrived to help save the day. There was a big ‘WTF?’ moment when the older Councilwoman Hawley suddenly goes into ninja mode with a melee of punches and kicks until it’s revealed by taking off her ‘nano mask’ (Mission: Impossible-style) that it’s actually Black Widow in disguise. Well played, ‘Tasha. Well played…

“HURGH! HA! HIYAH!”
(fighting sounds)

Black Widow’s Wit (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

BWWIT

Xenojay:

Natalia Romanova. Natasha Romanoff. Black Widow. Whatever name you pick, she’s still stunning and kicking your ass.

We already knew this.

Come The Winter Soldier though, we have a character engaging the Captain with quips about his age, constantly trying to set him up on dates and just generally shooting-the-breeze with our out-of-time Super Soldier.

So now the stunning, kick-ass assassin is a hilarious comedian and it only makes you love her that much more.

“Will you do me a favour? Call that nurse.”

A Trickster Falls (Thor: The Dark World)

Kenny:

A scene that really plays your heart strings! In a rare event, Thor and Loki form an unlikely alliance and go on a mission to Svartalfheim (AKA ‘The Dark World’) to avenge the death of their mother, save Jane and make a last-ditch attempt to stop The Dark Elves from destroying the universe.

With Thor in danger of being beaten within an inch of his life by the Hulk-like ‘Algrim’, Loki attempts to save Thor by impaling Algrim with a blade. Algrim, unperturbed by the huge blade launched into his back and sticking out of his chest, grabs Loki in for a “death hug” which also impaled Loki on the blade (an almost ‘karmic death’, considering the way Agent Phil Coulson met his death at the end of the blade, impaled on Loki’s sceptre in The Avengers).

Loki, in a self-sacrificing move, anticipated this enough to get closer and attach an imploding grenade that disintegrated Algrim into a miniature black hole, finally killing him. But not without the cost of Loki’s life as he lay there on the ground, dying in his brother Thor’s arms, who finally says sorry, before quietly slipping away, his lifeless body clutched by Thor who yells in agony, mourning for his brother. Dark and stormy clouds gather above, and a low rumble of thunder rolls in: Loki is dead*.

Thor: “I’ll tell father what you did here today.”
Loki: “I didn’t do it for him.”
*that bastard tricked us!

SCIENCE BROS! (The Avengers)

SCIBROS

Xenojay:

In The Avengers, we all got to see our dreams come true when heroes finally met heroes, and they came together to form one of the greatest team-ups in the world.

But not before they butted heads and had a beer or 2 (I’m assuming this happened).

Tony Stark, billionaire playboy-philanthropist and huge egotist, of course butts heads with everyone (That’s why he wears a sophisticated suit of armour).
But it’s his meeting with Bruce Banner which reflects that maybe Tony is just out to meet someone “on his level”.
As they converse in a language only they know and begin to work together, it culminates in Banner’s huge catch at the end of the Avengers establishing 2 friends that the world has now come to know as the ‘Science Bros’.

“Finally, someone who speaks English.”

Steve and Bucky (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Kenny:

This moment made me cry. Captain America fights for survival against his best friend Bucky Barnes who is the brainwashed mercenary called The Winter Soldier. Refusing to kill his best friend, Captain America throws away his shield. After a brutal fight within a falling helicarrier that’s literally breaking up into pieces around them, Captain America and The Winter Soldier in an emotional moment revert back to their true selves as Bucky and Steve. Almost beaten to death by Bucky who says killing Cap is his mission, Steve murmurs the same comforting words said by Bucky, back when they were kids…

“Then finish it. Because I’m with you ’til the end of the line…”

Thor’s Humanity (Thor)

THORDIES

Xenojay:

Thor was a pretty cool origin story.

It could have messed around with a lot of different elements that make up the Thor-mythos to create its origin (That ex-boyfriend joke? In the comics Thor LITERALLY takes over that person’s body as a weird “vessel” thing).

Instead it made a God a man, and taught him about humility and worthiness.

So when the character learns what this is, what it means to rise above one’s limits, you find resolve in his choice.

Until he’s suddenly killed by the Destroyer.

Yet this was a cool moment, because after he dies, he learns what it means to be worthy of the power of Thor.

“So is this how you normally look?”

Thunderstruck / Iron Man vs. Thor (The Avengers)

Kenny:

Both in a pursuit to bring Loki to justice, Thor meets our two Avengers Iron Man and Captain America for the first time (and not on good terms), which leads to an epic battle between Iron Man and Thor that sees them trading blows. This fight is a reminder that all of The Avengers are different people who all come from very different worlds (in the case of Thor, literally) and that is a recipe for personality clashes and in-fighting. The fact that they manage to form a team of incredible people is rare when so many odds are placed against them.

“Doth mother know you weareth her drapes?”

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

Kenny:

The defining moment, ladies and gentlemen. Up until this moment we’ve seen each of them on their own, fighting against the odds, fighting against each other, fighting beside each other, and at last all of them brought together in incredible circumstances to fight a force of unparalleled power, of cosmic proportions that none have faced before. This is the moment when together they all put aside their differences and become the ultimate team with the singular mission to save the world as not just heroes, but as The Avengers, assembled! .

“Call it, Captain.”

The Captain’s Strategy (The Avengers)

SMASH

Xenojay:

While we saw some of ‘Old School’-Rogers in his solo-outing The First Avenger, it’s The Avengers that gives Steve the opportunity to shine as the strategist and leader of the ensemble team. Seemingly outnumbered by an advanced alien race, the heroes manage to rally together and become something greater than their individual status.

In this moment, Iron Man asks the Captain to take the reins and with it he showcases the range of his tactical mind placing cover in the air, choke-points at entry and ground-level support.

But it’s his final command for the Hulk which finalises his position as the team’s leader with 2 simple words:

“Hulk. SMASH!”
