Society6. If you haven’t heard of it by now, your wallet is about to take a pounding.
Society6 started in 2009 as a platform to connect artists and buyers online after the wife of one of the founders had trouble coming up with money to pay for her art’s canvases and framing – missing out on showing at an event and vital sales.
“We got together and decided to create an ecosystem for artists and supporters from all over the world,” co-founder Justin Wills told BrainPickings. “As people become more engaged in the arts and more in touch with the artists they enjoy, more artist will be able to sustain themselves through direct relationships with their supporters.”
We wanted artists who are already doing great work to get the money and resources they need.
So how does it work?
Artists upload their designs to the site, which renders the design onto cups, phone cases, cushions, clocks, tshirts, and canvas as if those things already exist. Customers browse, find a design they like and the platform they like it on, and place an order.
Artists retain 100% of the rights to their art, and Society6 take a cut of the earnings.
