Lo-Fang: Indie Alt at it’s absolute best

Lo-Fang (real name Matthew Jordan Hemerlein) is your new favourite musician. Here’s why:

  • His voice is what dreams are made of – it’s haunting and beautiful in a way that lingers within your subconscious for days on end.
  • Not only does he possess a kick-ass voice, he also plays… wait for it… guitar, bass, piano, cello, violin and mandolin. I can play the Rugrats theme on the xylophone, go me.
  • He looks like this:

Come at me, bro.

  • The name “Lo-Fang”, for him, is symmetrical. It’s his way of balancing out the masculine vs. feminine elements of his music – if music can be androgynous, this is the be all and end all.
  • He opened for Lorde so therefore, he is cool by way of association.
  • His tune When We’re Fire is, without a doubt, one of my favourite songs. It’s sad yet catchy, upsetting yet hopeful. Plus, it incorporates one of the best middle-finger-to-the-world lines ever…

Why the f*ck did you just say that?
I’m a person, not a concept
Work it out or let me go.

Take that, stupid ex! You will no longer take me for granted! Not only am I worth more than you give me credit for, I can tell you where to go in song-form with the voice of an angel!

  • He does a brilliant cover of You’re the One that I Want from Grease. It’s the centrepiece of Baz Luhrmann’s newest Chanel venture, featuring Gisele, a very generically handsome bearded man, and a Chanel surfboard because KARL LAGERFLED CAN DO WHAT HE WANTS. Check it out below and be sure to close your eyes for better listening pleasure (you don’t need to watch the video, you’ve seen one Luhrmann film, you’ve seen ’em all):

Here’s to you, Lo-Fang, you genetically blessed, crystal voiced, deftly fingered genius. You are totally the one that I want.

PS. Go listen to his album Blue Film. NOW.
