Kraft Korner – Amigurumi Golden Snitch

Crocheted Golden Snitch

Remember that time you caught the Golden Snitch and won the House Cup?

Okay, maybe YOU didn’t, but it felt like you were there, goddamn it. Recapture that feeling with an amigurumi Golden Snitch.

Amigurumi (ah-me-goo-roo-me) loosely translates from the Japanese as “super cute thing made of yarn.” If you haven’t come across them before, check out the Wikipedia page, and then . Want to learn to crochet yet? Of course you do.

There really is something magical about amigurumi – it’s so quick to make one of these little snitches, you’ll feel like you just waved a magic wand. And people’s reactions are fun as well. “You MADE this?!” they say, “Oh, it was nothing,” you reply, polishing your fingernails on your shirt. My favourite ever compliment was “THIS is what you do with your skills? You should be in the UN!” All I did was crochet a fish for your birthday, it’s Hermione Fucking Granger that’s in the UN.

Harry Potter’s a cultural touch-stone for people more-or-less my age, and there’s something wonderful about sharing a signifier with a group of people. It may look like a small thing made of yarn, but this amigurumi snitch harks back to childhood (lost forever), what it feels like to read a good book for the first time (easily recaptured at your local library), and that time we won the House Cup.

This pattern is perfect for amigurumi-newbies: it’s just a sphere with wings on. Later in this series, we’ll look at more challenging designs, but this is a great place to start. You need to know how to single crochet, increase, decrease, and read a pattern. If you’re struggling, check out this with some techniques. If you’ve never crocheted before, spend a couple of hours swearing at YouTube tutorials before attempting this pattern.
